Marked
as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched.
But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the
most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a
beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those
like her. For Jacinda is a draki—a descendant of dragons whose greatest
defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.
Forced to
flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt
to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous,
elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is
irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his
family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner
draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human
forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting
closer to her most dangerous enemy.
Mythical powers and
breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all
expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.
I had
been reading quite a lot of good things about this novel and was really
looking forward to discover this new author and book. I love dragons and
was curious to see how Sophie Jordan would be dealing with them. I was
very lucky to receive this book from the French publishing house, Gallimard
Jeunesse - many thanks to them ! - so here's why the cover presented in
this article is the French one (but I think it looks really similar to
the original one, doesn't it ?).
When I
began reading the book, I was really into it. I loved the different
settings - the woods then the desert - and the plot around the dragons.
I thought the mythology established by the author was really
captivating and I couldn't stop myself from turning the pages. But then,
around the second half of the novel, the rhythm became too slow and I was getting almost bored. Fortunately the last chapters were very captivating and now I can't wait for the next book ! What I thought was a little disappointing in Firelight was that the romance, though really cute, was too important. The plot was really interesting and it's a shame the romance was the central point of the novel. Don't get me wrong, I love romance, and this one was really well thought up, but the story around the dragons and Drakis was so interesting that I wished it would have been more develop.
One thing I really liked in this novel was the characters. I loved Jacinda, a strong and touching young woman,Will with his dark side and Jacinda's friends who look so nice. The others characters were also very interesting, though quite hateful - I'm thinking about Jacinda's mother and sister who appear so selfish in the novel -.
Overall, Firelight was a really nice read. I enjoyed reading about dragons and I hope we'll learn more about them in the second book of this trilogy. I think this novel will please all Young-adult readers with an interest in fantasy.
